BEATING THE BOUNDS
Sunday 1 May 2016 – Rogation Sunday
After last year’s very successful ‘beating the bounds’ of Veryan parish we’re going to do it again this year. The younger [and fitter] walkers and runners will tackle the whole route, but most of us will probably opt for the second stage of the walk we began last May.
Last year a goodly group walked from Pendower to Beruppa, along the boundary between Veryan and Ruan. This year we start at Beruppa and walk to Hay Barton [it’s around 3-4 miles, mostly off-road].
Beating The Bounds 2016
Dedicated walkers and runners leave West Portholland at 8 am [walkers] or 9 am [runners].
Everybody else will leave Beruppa at 11.30 am after a short service led by Fr Doug [cars can be left here]
The route will be clearly marked and maps will be provided. We aim to reach Hay Barton at around 1 pm for lunch [we’re still working on this but refreshments may be available ]
Cars will take drivers back to Beruppa, or make your own arrangements if you want to carry on walking [Hay to West Portholland is around 5 miles].
There will be a barbecue at Pengelly Farm, West Portholland, from around 5 pm.
There’s no charge, and we hope that lots of you will want to join in. We hope to raise some funds to help the Cornwall Historic Churches Trust, which has provided substantial grants recently to make possible the restoration of the windows at both Veryan and Ruan churches, and to enable Veryan to install the new heating system. The Trust relies mainly on local fundraising for its income, and we feel that it’s time to say thank you by giving something back.
More information and maps will be available nearer the date: you can check the Veryan church website [www.veryanchurch.org.uk] or contact Barry Pound or by email on email@example.com or Christine Edwards or by email on firstname.lastname@example.org

VERYAN PCC ANNUAL MEETING 7 pm
What a lovely surprise a few Sundays ago to find bunches of flowers and pots of daffodils outside the church porch, with a note saying that they had been provided by ‘CHAOS’. Few of us knew what this organisation was: it was set up in our neighbourhood to help the disadvantaged in society in many practical ways. ‘Random acts of kindness’ include the distribution of supermarket goods donated to the charity close to their sell-by date: hence the gifts of flowers. Recipients are asked in return to do something for someone else, so passing on the ‘kindnesses’. The ‘chaos theory’ is the one that says that if a butterfly flaps its tiny wings somewhere on the planet, some time later somewhere else a chain reaction will cause something interesting to happen… We hope to feature the work of CHAOS in a future issue.
THE CHURCH CLOCK
has temporarily lost one of its faces: the huge gale in early March took the whole of the face from the north side of the church, fortunately causing no real damage to people or to the building, but requiring a major repair. Our insurers have been informed, and we await its restoration. Meanwhile many thanks to David Truscott for dealing so competently with the situation.
The ANNUAL PAROCHIAL MEETING will be held in church at 7pm on Wednesday 13 April, followed by a PCC meeting. If you are not on the Electoral Roll but would like to be , contact Sarah Rundle [01872 500950]
