Bene Amici Trio is the medieval and renaissance music ensemble of lutenists Ben Salfield and Denys Stephens, with soprano Lucile Clitherow.

Leading English lutenist Ben Salfield regularly performs and gives masterclasses in numerous European countries every year. He has been hailed by international music critics as one of the foremost lutenists of his generation. Denys Stephens first played in duo with Ben Salfield in 1989, since when they have been firm friends and worked together on many musical projects over the years. Denys is well-known as an early music arranger, editor and scholar. Lucile Clitherow has sung in various choirs for a number of years, and began studying renaissance song with Ben Salfield around seven years ago. Since then, she has appeared with him in concert in venues around the UK, and also sang at the Modra International Guitar Festival, Slovakia, in 2013.

Many of the songs included in the trio’s Christmas programme are arranged by them from medieval and renaissance sources such as the Piae Cantiones, and have consistently developed since their first performance together four years ago.

In this series of Christmas concerts, Bene Amici Trio will perform a fascinating cocktail of music and song from 14th to 16th century Europe, blending together the traditions of court and countryside festive themes.

Quartetto Nero

The brand new historical instrument string quartet Quartetto Nero is fast becoming one of Poland’s hottest properties as the young instrumentalists from Silesia take the country’s festivals and competitions by storm with their technical skill and fresh interpretations of the music of Haydn, Mozart, Boccherini and other 18th century composers.

The quartet features Agata Habera and Paulina Woś on baroque violins, Anna Wieczorek on baroque viola, and Katarzyna Cichoń on baroque ‘cello.

This series of concerts in Cornwall marks the first visit of the group to the UK, though its members have performed worldwide in other ensembles.

Each night of their visit to Cornwall will include a different programme – and features a guest appearance by international lutenist Ben Salfield for a special performance of Vivaldi’s Lute Concerto in D Major.
